Hardware fails, people make mistakes and ransomware is a real threat. The good news: a little planning prevents most disasters.

Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule

Keep 3 copies of important data, on 2 different types of media, with 1 copy stored off-site or in the cloud.

Test your backups

A backup you have never restored is only a hope. Test a restore at least once a quarter.

Watch for warning signs

  • Slow, freezing or unusually noisy computers
  • SMART warnings or frequent file errors
  • RAID or NAS alerts about degraded disks

Protect against ransomware

Keep systems updated, limit admin rights, train staff about suspicious emails and keep at least one backup disconnected from the network.

When disaster strikes

Stop using the affected device and call a professional before attempting repairs. Fast, correct action is the single biggest factor in a successful recovery.
