Hard Drive Removal Guide
How to safely remove a hard drive from a desktop or laptop and send it to us for recovery.
Step 1
Opening the computer case
- Shut down the computer and unplug all cables, including the power cable.
- Remove the screws on the rear of the PC.
- Slide the side panel(s) off from the back of the PC.
- On some cases you need to remove the front cover to reach the drive cage — press the retaining tabs and pull forward, carefully detaching any cables attached to it.
Step 2
Disconnecting the hard drive
- Locate the hard drive — it is usually below the CD/DVD drive and has a flat data cable.
- Gently disconnect the SATA (or older IDE) data cable and the power cable from the back of the drive.
Step 3
Removing the drive
- If the drive is fixed to the chassis or drive cage with screws, remove the screws and slide the drive out.
- If it is held by a plastic latch, lift the latch and slide the drive out.
- Hold the drive by its sides — never touch the circuit board or connectors.
Laptop
Removing a laptop drive
- Shut down the laptop, unplug the charger and, if possible, remove the battery.
- Turn the laptop over and locate the drive cover (often marked with a disk symbol) or remove the full bottom panel.
- Remove the screws, lift the cover and gently slide the drive out of its connector.
- Some laptops and all newer MacBooks have storage soldered to the motherboard — in that case, bring the whole laptop to us.
